hotel and transport question

Hi,

My husband and I (mid 20s) will be travelling to NYC for first time on dec 27th for 8 nights.

I have found a few hotel deals: Average nightly rate

Milford Plaza (midtown) $214

Grand Hyatt NY $271

Hilton NY (midtown) $236.50

Millenium Hilton $259

Washington Square (Greenwich) $261

Any recommendations on these hotels??

Also we will be visiting relatives in Yorktown Heights on Dec 30th. Will all public transport be operational to get into the city on 31st?

Thanks in advance

hotel and transport question

You might want to post this question on the New York City Forum for more responses.

I can tell you that the Milford Plaza is affectionally renamed the Mildew Plaza by the locals and isn%26#39;t recommended. Have you looked at the ratings and comments of the others on here?

Like I said though I don%26#39;t know much about accommodation but if you repost on the other forum you should get some good answers.

    Hi,

I am going to New York for the first time in September and I want to stay as central as possible. I have been told there is a YMCA in downtown NY, please can someone tell me the address of this one?

Also are you able to get a twin room?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Cathster

I think possibly you are referring to the Vanderbilt YMCA which is on 47th (I think). If you repost this question onto the New York City Forum you should get a better response from people more in the know than me though :)

    Ellis Island Tour Question

Has anyone taken this tour? I know the ferry is not included in the price of the tour which is fine but do I also need to book the ferry or is our place on the ferry reserved %26amp; we just pay when we get there??

    Tks in advance

    Ellis Island Tour Question

The tour on Ellis Island is free unless you want to rent the audio tour for an additional $6. You need to pay for the ferry which goes to both the Statue of Liberty and to Ellis Island for the same price. It is better to buy the ferry tickets in advance so that you don%26#39;t have to wait on the ticket purchase line.

    Ellis Island Tour Question

Tks, we had been looking at a tour on www.ellisislandtours.com which is $20. Are there free tours we can join in on when we get to Ellis Island? We always prefer a tour guide in places like this - we don%26#39;t mind paying but obviously don%26#39;t want to waste our money if free tours are available

Park Rangers lead a varity of tours and talks through out the day.

they are free. The basic guided tour runs about 45 minutes and runs every day. Special interest tours run on a less dependeable time table.

    Check out the site

    ellisislandtours.com

I have taken it and it is fantastic, covering Ellis Island as well as all sorts of really interesting sites in and around lower Manhattan, including the Irish Famine Memorial which is an incredible site! and a great ride on the NY/NJ water taxi. It%26#39;s led by a licensed tour guide who is a former Ellis Island Park Ranger

When are you getting here? Have a great trip. Ta. MMM!

MMM510 - we arrive 22nd July %26amp; were looking at the tour for wednesday 26th. It gives start time of the tour as 8.45 am. Does that mean we have to be on Ellis Island for that time or do we meet a ferry at that time? Do we use the normal SOL ferry or is it a separate one for this tour??

I%26#39;ve had a look at the ellis island website %26amp; can%26#39;t find any info on their free tours which snowman %26amp; NYC10025 mentioned. Can anyone help me with this??

    Tks

Shelly, all those questions are answered when you go to the Zerve site, but I%26#39;m pretty sure you don%26#39;t meet on Ellis Island. Since the tour I went on was as part of a group, we met at a location convenient to us and then took public transportation down to the World Financial Buildings and really began our tour there ... check out the review I wrote on taking this tour on the 18th of June - it was really wonderful and the Irish Hunger Memorial should not be missed! I%26#39;ll see if I can%26#39;t get some more info on the non-group tours and post it later. Ta for now. MMM!

Also are you able to get a twin room?

    Hostels in New York

There%26#39;s one on E47th St (Vanderbilt YMCA) and also on W63rd St (this one does advertise as having single, double and quad rooms). All phone numbers and full addresses are on this site (http://tinyurl.com/kmbmu)

    Hostels in New York

The best hosel is the city is not as central, called Hostelling International (HI). Look at reviews on hostelz.com They do have twin rooms but they get booked quickly.

Th HI hostel mentioned in the previous note is at 103rd St. and Amsterdam Ave. It is a block from the subway and it takes about 15 minutes to get to midtown (42nd. St. )

Greetings from Silver Creek, New York!

    Hi Tressa......long time no see...... : - )

There is plenty to do for the outdoors person here in Chautauqua County. We do have horseback riding and i still think you would enjoy the Panama Rocks ......it is hiking, caves and caverns all in one place!

There are also plenty of good places to eat.....Primo%26#39;s and the Colony come to mind.

I am assuming you will be coming off the I-90 into Silver Creek and then turning left onto Alleghany Road. You will pass both Primo%26#39;s and the Colony. Tom%26#39;s on the corner is a good place for breakfast. The Hideaway, which is located in Silver Creek right on Lake Erie,is excellent, however, I think a bit more on the pricey side.

Since you have a whole month to plan, I will try to find you some websites and e-mail addresses to explore.

Welcome, in advance, to my little corner of the world!

    Dinner Upon Late Arrival

We arrive our first night in New York at about 9:30 after spending 12 hours on a train, we will have lunch and snacks on the train but when we arrive at The Radio City Apartments we would like to go out for something light. What is within walking distance without having to go to far at that time of night? Any delis or places where we could get cheesecake?

    Dinner Upon Late Arrival

I would suggest Juniors in Times Square, on W. 45th between Broadway %26amp; 8th Avenues, a 6 block walk from your hotel, they close at midnight, and it would be fun to see Times Square at night on the way!

    Dinner Upon Late Arrival

Agree with NYCgirl if you want cheesecake and a view of Times Square. The Art Cafe is a bit closer and would also be good.

  • Timing question

Our plane arrives at LGA at 8am on Saturday. We are at the Belvedere hotel (48th and 8th) and I want to book our circleline tour for 10:30. Do you think that is cutting it too close?

Also, if we were to walk to the pier would we walk down 8th and then all the way along 42nd st. or is there a better route.

    Thanks

    Timing question

Yes, you are cutting it too close. What if your plane is delayed? I would make it a little later.

If the planets are aligned you may make it, but why have the stress, it is your vacation, not a marathon.

Yes, you can walk down 42nd Street to the pier.

    Timing question

If your plane lands on time, you should make the boat. But why rush yourself? You%26#39;re on VACATION. Relax. Do the boat ride later in the day or another day.

The walk to the pier from your hotel is not particularly attractive or interesting (imo). If you want to try to make that 10:30 cruise, I would take a taxi. Otherwise, there%26#39;s a bus on 49 st. (the #50) that ends at the Circle Line Pier. Why not take that?

I think that%26#39;s cutting it close, or at least you%26#39;d be rushed with very little, if any, margin for error.

Not even relating to congestion and traffic in NYC in general, it could take a few minutes to get your bags from the airport, or your plane may be delayed for a few minutes. (I dont think you mentioned, but I assume you are going by cab? if public transport, forget about it.) Despite being 8am, which I guess would minimize traffic ';a bit'; on the highways (as in the Queens parts), it still takes some time to go from the east side to the west side of Manhattan at any hour of the day (plus who knows what streets are closed for street fairs, parades, etc.)

The other thing is people tend to underestimate the length of the walk from 8th Ave to the water. It takes some time to do that walk, like at least 15 minutes, if you aren%26#39;t powerwalking or something.

So my honest opinion is you%26#39;d be cutting it pretty darn close. If you can do something later, that%26#39;d probably be safer. That way you can settle in a bit and stroll over. Instead of running for a departing ferry. :)

As for the route, I guess it%26#39;s as good as any. There should be no difference, since it%26#39;s more what%26#39;s on a particular block. Take a different route each time so you can check it out. I dont think there%26#39;s much on the path on 42nd st west of 8th ave in general. It%26#39;s where the Port Authority is, and there aren%26#39;t sights to see on that walk. Unless you%26#39;re into shady foot traffic around the PA.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Thanks all,

I guess I knew it was cutting it close but the next one is at 12:30 and that just seems to take up too much of the day. I%26#39;ll think about it. I wanted to do the cruise first because I am bringing someone who has never been to NYC and I thought it would be a great way for him to get his bearings.

Maybe we will just have breakfast somewhere and stroll around and end up at the pier.

You haven%26#39;t asked, but I wouldn%26#39;t take a cruise first thing after being on a plane. Get your land legs. Have a nice breakfast. Maybe take a bus tour. Walk around. Maybe do the harbor lights cruise to see the city lit up.

    5 Days Itinerary -Please comment!!

Here goes our itinerary for 5 nights/6 days in NY in August. We arrive (with God%26#39;s will) at he 5th and leave at 10th.

    DAY 1: Saturday

Arrival at the hotel Edison, about 16:00.

Unpack, and get out. Walk through Broadway Av. to Times Square, see NY Public Library, Grand Central Station, Chrysler Building and then walk to Empire State Building, go up at night to see the view. Eat somewhere at Times Square.

    DAY 2: Sunday

Walk from Hotel to Rockefeller Plaza, up to TOTR, see Radio City and maybe the Mass in St. Patrick鈥檚 Cathedral.

Take subway to Museum of Natural History, visit Museum and then visit Rose Center for Earth and Space, watch Space Show, and maybe Imax cinema (3D Film). (Will we find tickets?) Then walk to Central Park and spent the day there.

At night maybe go out to a Jazz club. Any suggestions?

    DAY 3: Monday

Subway from Hotel to Staten Island Ferry.

Take the Ferry and see SOL and Ellis island but not visit them.

Back to the subway and visit to Wall Street, then walk to Ground Zero, visit St. Paul鈥檚 Chapel, walk to City Hall, cross Brooklyn Bridge, eat at Grimaldi鈥檚. Anything else good there to eat in case we don鈥檛 find at Grimaldi鈥檚?

    DAY 4: Tuesday

Subway from Hotel to Flatiron Building and Theodore Roosevelt House, then walk to Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Soho, Tribeca, China Town Little Italy鈥? If our feet can handle this! Eat??

    DAY 5: Wednesday

SHOPPING!! (at last)! Walk through 5th Avenue, visit Macy鈥檚!! and anything else we see interesting (and we will probably see a lot).

In the evening maybe visit Astoria to meet some Greek immigrants!!

    DAY 6: Thursday

We are leaving in the afternoon so in the morning we will do some catching up with things that we didn鈥檛 have enough time to see or go back to some places we liked! Probably visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a last walk through Central Park!

Please check it out and make your suggestions! It is a little long. Is it possible? Is it too much?

    Any comments are welcome!

    Thanks in advance!!

    5 Days Itinerary -Please comment!!

It all sounds fine except for Day 4. You can%26#39;t possibly cover basically all of downtown in a day on foot. I suggest you either pick very specific things in each neighborhood and map out how to get from one to the other OR, maybe you should consider the downtown loop of the Grayline bus tour?

For jazz clubs, look on bigapplejazz.com for a list of places in all neighborhoods. Dizzy%26#39;s Coca Cola in the Time Warner building has good jazz and nice views but it%26#39;s pricey with a cover charge.

On day 3, if you don%26#39;t find Grimaldi%26#39;s, perhaps head to Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade for great views and a nice neighborhood with restaurants. But here%26#39;s a post on how to walk the bridge.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k508533-鈥?/a>

Macy%26#39;s is not on Fifth ave. nor is it really near the Fifth Ave. stores. If you go there, don%26#39;t forget to register for an 11% discount card. Same at Bloomingdales.

    Have fun!

    5 Days Itinerary -Please comment!!

are these Greek immigrants you know?!?

or you just want to visit Greek immigrants?

I mean Astoria is pretty diverse now, you%26#39;d visit immigrants of many different backgrounds, not just Greek.

Nywhiz I was afraid DAY 4 was very ambitious!! It doesn%26#39;t matter though, we will start walking and see when our feet start protesting!! Good idea though about the bus tour.

And we will try what you advise in Brooklyn!

Macy%26#39;s is not near 5th Avenue?? I thought I saw it on the map!! I will have to look again.. sorry!

Shrewdfool, we don%26#39;t know any Greek in New York, we actually don%26#39;t know anybody else (except you wonderful people). I know Astoria has a lot of immigrants from various places, we just thought we would go around the place and maybe eat at a Greek restaurant or Cafe, if we found one, just for the fun of meeting someone from home, so far away!

Thanks very much for your answers!

    Hotel prices in November!

I checked several websites and could not believe how expensive hotel rooms are in November....8-11....what is going on...a room at the Hilton is 499$...I have not been to New York for over a year...am I out of touch or is somethng big going on in town????

    Hotel prices in November!

It%26#39;s just after the NY Marathon. There may be something else going on. Not sure.

Look on quikbook.com There are quite a few decent hotels available for around $250/night. I%26#39;d go for the Kimberly for $255 or the Blakely for $289.

    Hotel prices in November!

It%26#39;s also Veteran%26#39;s Day, a long weekend for many.

    hotel and transport question

    Hi,

My husband and I (mid 20s) will be travelling to NYC for first time on dec 27th for 8 nights.

I have found a few hotel deals: Average nightly rate

    Milford Plaza (midtown) $214

    Grand Hyatt NY $271

    Hilton NY (midtown) $236.50

    Millenium Hilton $259

    Washington Square (Greenwich) $261

    Any recommendations on these hotels??

Also we will be visiting relatives in Yorktown Heights on Dec 30th. Will all public transport be operational to get into the city on 31st?

    Thanks in advance

    hotel and transport question

Milford Plaza would be the last on the list, all of the others are much better.

Public tranport is always running, on a holiday schedule however, so you will have to check on the times so that you don%26#39;t end up waiting an hour for a train (presuming Metro North train to Yorktown Heights?).

Subways/ buses in NYC run 24/7.

    hotel and transport question

PLEASE eliminate the Milford Plaza from your list. It doesn%26#39;t compare to the others.

The rest, imo, are all good. The Millenium Hilton is all the way downtown next to the former WTC site and it wouldn%26#39;t be my pick for location, especially at Xmas/NY%26#39;s time. It is a newer hotel though and has nice amenities (I think they have a pool). I%26#39;d just want to pay less to stay there. Most of the ';Christmassy'; stuff is midtown.

The Washington Square is in an ideal location for a young couple since ';the village'; (NOT Greenwich) is also home to NY University, lots of smaller shops, restaurants and more residential.. It%26#39;s a smaller more European style hotel. We%26#39;ve heard some rooms are renovated (and nice) and others are not very nice.

The Hilton NY is the most central location on your list and more of a typical tourist location within a short walk to Central Park and Times Square and the shops on Fifth Ave. It%26#39;s also a very large and some would say impersonal corporate type hotel.

The Grand Hyatt imo is not worth that much more than the Hilton NY. They%26#39;re similar type hotels and I think the NY Hilton location is preferable.

I did a search on my favorite website, quikbook.com and only about 4 hotels show up. I don%26#39;t know if it may be very early for Dec. bookings or whether hotels are that heavily booked. I did try the Blakely, one that I like a lot, and it%26#39;s not available during the New Year%26#39;s period on their website. The Affinia group (all suite hotels) are mostly not available for your entire stay. Yikes!

The time you%26#39;re coming is typically less expensive. I wonder if closer to the date you may find better prices or special deals (travelzoo.com) although none of these look seriously out of line.

If you decide on either the Hiltons or the Hyatt, I would join their frequent guest programs online. That may get you a better room or some freebies.

Transport on the 31st should be fine but it may be very crowded with revelers coming in for the Times Square ';do.'; I don%26#39;t know which train you%26#39;d use for Yorktown Heights.

Since Yorktown Heights itself has no train service, your relatives would need to get you from/to the MetroNorh station at Bedford Hills (MetroNorth). Both Amtrak %26amp; MetroNorth have stops at Peekskill and Croton-on-Harmon, but those are further away; because it%26#39;s a commuter railroad, MetroNorth%26#39;s fares are cheaper than Amtrak%26#39;s.

Check with your Yorktown Heights relatives for the nearest town serviced by Metro North. t depends upon where they live in Yorktown Heights. It could be Peekskill or Katonah.

    Hi,

Visiting Lake George for the 1st time after 10 years and can%26#39;t remember too much or remember exactly where Shepard%26#39;s Park is. Can anyone tell us if you need to arrive early, etc.. for entertainment or can you just go and find a spot ? Our 10 yr old son who plays viola discovered the Glen Falls Symphony will be in shepard%26#39;s park on July 13th when we are there so we would really like to take him. How big and how crowded is Shepards Park? Also heard parking is bad??. We are staying out of town at the RV Park so wondering if there are large public parking lots avail for nightly trips into town. Last time I remember trying to find street parking just outside of town and walking. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

    shepard's park

Shepard%26#39;s Park is right on Canada Street (route 9 is the same) It is a beach, hill of grass, area for picnicing, outdoor carnivals etc. For decent seating I would arrive a good hour early for an event in you dont want to fight a crowd for upfront view. It%26#39;s not huge, but it is a decent size grassy area, at the bottom of it is the beach. Parking is always hard in Lake George, unless its out of season. From the RV Park, if you dont have a smaller vehicle then I would just grab the Trolley or a Taxi, it%26#39;s almost impossible to park an RV in town. The trolley stops at several spots throughout Lake George and the neighboring areas, which RV park are you staying at? They can give you the schedule there, or http://www.lakegeorge.net/other/trolley.html that is a partial schedule, not all stops are listed there, but that%26#39;s the only one I could find online. Hope this helps, let me know if I can help with anything else, have a great trip!

Thanks for the info, greatly appreciated. We are staying at the Lake George RV Park and I know they have limited trolley service, but wasnt sure how late the town trolleys they hook into run. Can%26#39;t wait to visit, I remember the lake being so clean and nice. Thanks again!

You%26#39;re welcome. L.G.RV is a great RV park, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have a great time. flooding in your area

My family is going to old forge the week of July 10th. I have heared around that area has had rather substantial flooding. Has this effected your towm or highways? Any info would be very appreciated

    Thanks

    flooding in your area

I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll love your trip. There was quite a bit of flooding but most of it was south of us, from Albany area to Syracuse mainly I-90. http://www.nysthruway.gov/index.shtml This is the New York State Thruway Authority website where you can view travel conditions. Check with where you%26#39;re lodging to make sure they didn%26#39;t have any flooding problems, and if all of their roads are still passable, as there was atleast 1 road I know of that was washed away, that was in Chester I do believe, didn%26#39;t hear of any in old forge. Our water levels are high this year, you may see warnings of where and when you can swim etc. Have a fun safe trip!

If it%26#39;s considerably cheaper, I%26#39;d go to Newark. if it%26#39;s minimal, I prefer the drive from JFK into Manhattan(the fare by taxi from there is $45 plus toll and tip). • How to get from Salisbury Hotel to the US Tennis Open

    Hi all,

My husband and I will be in NY 3-7 September this year and were wondering how far from the Salisbury Hotel is it to the Arthur Ashe Stadium where the US Tennis Open is being hosted? Is it easy to get there? Can we catch a train? Is it even worth going to?!

    Thanks for your advice!

    OzTourist

How to get from Salisbury Hotel to the US Tennis Open

I%26#39;m not positive, but I think your hotel is quite close to the 59th (Columbus Circle) subway, so you could take the Red line subway downtown to the 42nd St (Times Square) station and then transfer to the 7 train to the Willets Point station which is where you get off to get to the Tennis Center.

How to get from Salisbury Hotel to the US Tennis Open

Oops, I checked and it looks like you are close to the 57th St station at 6th Ave, so you could take the F train downtown, then get off at 42nd St (Times Square), then switch to 7 train to the US Tennis Center (Ashe Stadium). Go to www.mta.info for more subway info.

Oz, I%26#39;m sorry, I keep screwing up here, so maybe you shouldn%26#39;t listen to me at all. LOL

If you take the F train downtown, looks like you can get off at 42nd St (Bryant Park), then take what looks like a shuttle to 5th Ave station, where you can then link to the 7 train.

Okay, I won%26#39;t say anymore on this. Good luck.

Just get to the Times square subway station and get on the number 7 train there. We went last year.By the time the train gets to grand central it is full so even though we were staying near grand central we took the subway shuttle back to times square and got on the 7 train there.

At the other end the station is right at the stadium.Often it is best to walk to the southern side of the stadium as the entry lines there are not as long as at the main entrance.

We thoroughly enjoyed last year especially seeing Lleyton dispose of Taylor Dent-just!

You can also use HopStop for subway directions:

    www.hopstop.com

The Open is fun, and it is usually very hot! Bring a hat or visor, and sunscreen. Also, security is tight (just like everywhere), so no bottles, sharp objects, large bags, etc.

You should buy stadium tix now, especially if you want to see a particular match. You can also buy just a ';grounds'; ticket that is cheaper (around $45) and let%26#39;s you roam around and check out the smaller matches, but not the biggies.

Also, prices for food and drinks are really outrageous! A hot dog could be $10! Eat beforehand or be prepared to drop some serious bucks.

I didn%26#39;t go last year, but I hear our tennis manners are getting worse and worse by the year. My friends complained of many cringing moments! Try not be too shocked by our lack of ettiquette!

Walk to the station at 59th St. and Broadway. Follow signs that direct you to the #1 train DOWNTOWN. Take the #1 train to the second stop, 42nd St. Follow the signs to the #7 train and take that to the Willets Point station and follow the crowd exiting the subway. Don%26#39;t ask people for directions to the RED Line - they won%26#39;t know what you are talking about. Trains are identified by a number or a letter.

To get to #7 train at 42nd street you have to walk DOWN two flights of stairs. This is where the #7 begins its run to Queens so the first train that shows up is the one to take. If there is a train in the station take that train.

If you are near 7th/57th, just take the R train (UPTOWN) to Roosevelt Avenue/74th St in Queens and go UP STAIRS for the flushing (#7 train).

Or take the F (UPTOWN) at 6th ave/56th St to Roosevelt Avenue, and change for the #7.

    Antique Shops or Flea Markets

Are there any good areas or towns around Syracuse where you find good antique or flea market shopping?

    Antique Shops or Flea Markets

I haven%26#39;t been to it for a few years, but the Regional Market has a Flea Market on Sundays at the Regional Market near the Regional Transportation Center and our big mall that is making all the headlines lately! Serious shoppers used to show up early, between 6 and 7 a.m. BLT%26#39;s (browsers, lookers and touchers) show up after 10 and vendors leave between 2 and 4. Expect a small market compared to most cities.

    Antique Shops or Flea Markets

It%26#39;s a little bit of a drive, about an hour, but the town of Bouckville has many antique stores. They have a huge antique fair the end of august. Take route 92, south-east, out of Syracuse, then east on 20

    What clothes do I take?

We%26#39;re off to Boston, New York and Washington, with a few days on Roanoke Island thrown in at the end of holiday - end July to middle of August. What sort of clothes should I take - or just empty cases to fill when we get there? Want to look the biz in cities but need casual for beach bit - don%26#39;t want to take loads of stuff that I won%26#39;t wear and need clothes that will pack and unpack easily. Obviously from questions you%26#39;ll gather I%26#39;m a woman!

    What clothes do I take?

I vote for the empty suitcases - mad shopping spree in NY!! We take the bare minimum when we go now and then buy a load of stuff to bring back with us :)

    What clothes do I take?

I%26#39;m with Louise on that one 2 very large empty suitcases going 4 very large very full cases going home ;o)

Well, I think something in the middle is wisest. ;) If you bring nothing, you%26#39;ll have nothing to wear at the beginning of the trip. Assuming the order of stops is as you wrote, I don%26#39;t know shopping in Boston very well. Maybe you should post on the Boston board about that. It will be warm to HOT. There%26#39;s just no way to advise you about the details other than to say:

%26gt;try to have some sort of color scheme going so things match each other. Casual t shirts/tops can be used for both beach and city wear. In the summer, doing sightseeing, you don%26#39;t need to ';look the biz'; in the cities while you%26#39;re outside sightseeing. At night and in restaurants is another story , but again, only if you%26#39;re going to dressy places. All the cities have become more casual.

%26gt;bring things that can be layered/have dual uses.

    Hotel price 10/10 - 10/15

    Hi,

I%26#39;m looking for a nice hotel (4* if possible) near Times Square or Central Park south.

It seems prices are extremely high. I also used Pricewatch-bidding and went up to 230 dollar per night but without luck.

    Any advice ?

(I%26#39;m happy the euro-dollar exchange rate is good for us Europeans)

    Hotel price 10/10 - 10/15

    Hi kevertje,

I believe most people on here would tell you to avoid staying in Time Square if possible. I recently returned from my first trip to NYC and would most definitely agree. You literally have to wade through crowds of people, mostly tourists, and there are so many other wonderful neighborhoods in which to stay. I would definitely check out places on the Upper West Side. It%26#39;s a lovely neighborhood where you would get a real New York experience. The experts on here often suggest the Lucerne.

I%26#39;m sure others far more knowledgeable then me will send you more information. The people on here are super!

Hi JPMA845 -- In this post you refer to the Ocean Beach Resort but in another post you refer to Oceanside Beach Resort. Can you clerify which location you had the bad experience at ? • Any nice small hotels in NY?

I%26#39;d love to take my husband to NY for his 50th birthday in December. Our friend is directing a show on Broadway and I%26#39;d love to take my husband to see it. Advice please. When is the cheapest time to fly from London to NY around that time? Cheaper in January??? Also, I%26#39;d love to find a good small hotel. We are not fans of big, impersonal glossy hotels..prefer something with some character..any ideas anyone? I%26#39;m overloaded with info from websites and offers of cheap city breaks and don%26#39;t know where to start. Is it better to wait til nearer the time or book now? HELP!

Any nice small hotels in NY?

It is definitely cheaper in January. You could find a really nice hotel for much less than any time of year. I went in January of this year and I stayed at the Clarion (budget hotel, but super clean and breakfast included) for 80$ a night. If you have the budget to spend more, you could look at the top 20 hotels in trip advisor and check out their websites. I recommend highly hotels from the HK chain (Giraffe, Casablanca, 脡lysee and Library Hotel). They all have breakfast and nightly wine and cheese service from 5 to 8. The staff is nice and not pretentious like some hotels. They are medium sized but have the feel of a small one because they recognize their clients and are really friendly. I personnally stayed at the Giraffe and loved it.

There%26#39;s the Roger Williams in the same area as the Giraffe which I also loved. The service is friendly and professional.

If you like the hotels with character and not impersonal service, you should look to the boutique hotels. The term has been a little bit used for any sort of hotel lately, but it should be what you should be leaning towards.

Any nice small hotels in NY?

I just found this for you....I knew I had seen a site where they had boutique hotels. You could double check with trip advisor and I always look at the pictures from the members of trip advisor who stayed at the hotels. You see the difference with the hotel websites sometimes...and the difference is not always pretty!!!

    hotelrooms.com/Boutique_Hotels_USA_New_York.鈥?/a>

An alternative to hotels is to stay in an apartment that is being leased out very short term (weekends, 2-3 days, etc). We did this and ended up with a wonderful place in the East Village for a great price. Check out craigslist for these deals -- these kinds of temporary rentals are not done in most cities, but NY is not most cities.

Oh, what a fabulous 50th birthday you%26#39;re planning! I love the Iroquois (next door to the Alconquin) on E. 44th Street, midway between Grand Central Terminal and Times Square. Very attractively furnished rooms with comfy beds dressed in Frette linens; excellent interior soundproofing (if you%26#39;re a light sleep, however, you%26#39;ll want to ask for a room which does not face the street); topnotch service -- personable %26amp; attentive without being intrusive or fawning. Also a sauna and nice little ';health club'; facility.

Because it was built in the 1920%26#39;s, the room sizes do vary more than those in a ';cookie cutter'; chain hotel %26amp; some of the lowest-priced (a/k/a ';Superior';) rooms can be ';compact';. Altho%26#39; that%26#39;s less likely if you%26#39;re booking a Superior room with 1 bed rather than 2, I think it%26#39;s worth spending another $30/night for a Deluxe room -- or better yet, one of their truly lovely suites :-)

    http://iroquoisny.com/specials.html

P.S. I used to book the Iroquois through Express Reservations as it offered a better rate than the hotel%26#39;s own web site. Express Reservations, however, just went out of business, having been bought out last month by quikbook.com, an online reservations service which has always been highly regarded by the NYC Local Experts here. So that would be a good place to start your hotel hunt.

Manhattan hotel rates have been on an upward climb for almost a year and don%26#39;t show signs of dropping. So your best bet is to make ASAP a reservation you can cancel without penalty at a hotel you would consider acceptable and then keep your eye out for any special promotions which might be announced between now and your arrival date. TravelZoo is an excellent ';clearing house'; for such closer-in-time- deals.

    http://hotels.travelzoo.com/new-york-hotels/

If you want to come in Dec., rates drop after about the 18th of Dec. It%26#39;s very inexpensive to fly from London on Xmas day or Boxing day (not a holiday here). Perhaps come end of Dec. and leave first week of Jan.

In addition to smaller hotels there are also some lovely inns. Does that appeal to you. Have a look at

    1871house.com

    wymanhouse.com

The Blakely is a nice smaller hotel with some apt. like suites.

    comfy beds dressed in Frette linens;

They are my favorite. But there%26#39;s 2 kinds, the good and the REALLY good.

Let%26#39;s just say that whether the Frette bedding %26amp; towels provided by the Iroquois are the good kind or the ';really good'; ones, they%26#39;re better than anything in the linen closet at my own apartment :-)

Just wanted to supported Whiz%26#39;s recommendation for Wyman House. This is one where the pictures on the website really do show what the rooms are like. It%26#39;s a haven of peace of the Upper West Side, with a bus stop right outside the door which makes getting around really easy. It won%26#39;t be the cheapest option you can find, but it%26#39;s great value for money - we got a huge bedroom, separate kitchen and large bathroom - and wouldn%26#39;t hesitate to go back.

Thanks everyone....all good stuff. Will probably ask for further advice nearer the time, as the last time I was in NY was sailing in on the QE1 in the 1960%26#39;s !!! Must have changed a bit since then eh?

Do you mean ';Joseph %26amp; the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoats';?

    The Wedding Singer

Depending when you arrive, some others not yet open:

    Chorus Line

    Restaurants near MSG

Our son is graduating from NYPD Academy 6/26. We are looking for a restaurant nearby for about a dozen people. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. Mike

Congratulations and tell him thank you already!

A couple i have in mind are Mustang Harry%26#39;s and Mustang Sally%26#39;s on 7th ave and 29th/30th street (2 different restaurants, both have bars up front with restaurant tables in back).

Another place i like is Stout, but it gets very loud and crowded towards the evening, also don%26#39;t let them put you in the basement where the bands play or you will be deafened. Stout is on 32nd street between 6th and 7th aves:

    Restaurants near MSG

    Congratulations!

Just a few blocks away is Keen%26#39;s Steakhouse. Very good food and a real New York ambiance,

Mongcop, those restaurants i just mentioned are perhaps not what you are looking for in a celebratory graduation meal, i guess you would be looking for something much nicer, i didn%26#39;t think about that until i saw voy%26#39;s recommendation re Keens.

Korean BBQ is good for groups so perhaps K-town.

It really depends on what sort of place/food/budget you want. Nick %26amp; Stef%26#39;s is also steak and inside Penn Plaza. Not as good as Keen%26#39;s. (Keen%26#39;s also has some WONDERFUL private rooms that would be great for a party of 12 if you want to be alone,

If you want something more casual, there%26#39;s a Dempsey%26#39;s pub at 34th %26amp; Fifth. Il Campanello on 31 st b/w 6th %26amp; 7th is also very nice.

    www.ilcampanelloristorante.com/home.html.

Thank you for all your suggestions. We decided to go with Mustang Harry%26#39;s. It was only 2 blocks from the Garden and we wanted an assortment of lunch choices rather than a heavy meal. We arrived earlier than our reservation time, but were seated right away. We had a table upstairs, away from another large table. It was almost like a private room. There was a variety of choices on the menu, and everyone was pleased. It was very enjoyable. Thanks again! Mike

Glad you had a succesful meal, happy 4th to you all!

Congratulations and glad your meal was a success.

Wishing your son lots of luck %26amp; a very safe career, and I agree, thanks in advance!!

  • Stopping point near Port Chester?

We%26#39;re driving on a Sunday leaving around 7am from Boston to Harrisburg, PA. In looking at the map it seems that Port Chester is our 1/2 way point. Is there a nice place we can stop for lunch nearby? It would be me and my two kids who are 9 and 10 so casual and easy is the name of the game.

    Thanks!

    Stopping point near Port Chester?

I would recommend you also look at Southern Connecticut, anwhere between Norwalk and Greenwich, which are not far from Port Chester, but likely have more nice lunch options. I also suggest you post this on the Connecticut forum.

    Subway to Shea Stadium

We are staying at the Iroquis Hotel in New York City. Is there a close by station to ride the subway from the hotel to Shea Stadium?

    Subway to Shea Stadium

From you hotel you walk to 42 Street and Fifth Avenue subway station (about 5 minute walk). Take the number 7 train toward Queens. Get off at the Willets Point/Shea Stadium stop.

  • Great Specifics for Finger Lakes

thank you for your wonderful specific info. I am definitely going to ask you a few things. You are kind. When do you usually go there,in summer? We like B%26amp;B%26#39;s and inns as well. I have heard of the Aurora Inn,north of Cayuga Lake%26#39;s east bank and Silver Strand at Sheldrake 20 miles north of Ithica. Also the Cayuga Lakeside Inn and the Esperanza Mansion near Keuka Lake. These have been highly recommended. Do you know of any of them? What inns do you like in addition to the one you mentioned? I have also heard of the Village Tavern Inn in Hammondsport.

We were thinking maybe of staying two nights in one place and two in another.

Have you been to Ithica and Cornell? I hear it is wonderful there . We love beautiful scenery most of all and lovely scenic places to stay. We like to drink wine but would not stop at a winery. Good food is important but it does not have to be cutting edge, just taste good.

We live in Florida so we are hoping for some really great colored leaves.

Have you ever driven from Buffalo or Niagara Falls to the Finger Late area? We are wondering how long it will take.

    Thanks ,Coleridge

    Great Specifics for Finger Lakes

We usually go to the Finger Lakes over Memorial Day weekend. But we%26#39;ve also been there as early as late-April (a little chilly, damp and not as ';spring-like'; as it is in southeastern PA at that time of year) and as late as mid-October (the leaves may have been off the trees at that time....it was our first visit and I honestly don%26#39;t remember). We did stay once over 4th of July timeframe, when it was brutally hot, but I think that year, the entire east coast was having a heat wave.

Of the inns you mention above, I%26#39;ve only eaten at Esperanza mansion. They have a fine dining restaurant there (good food) and a more casual pub/grill restaurant. They also have an outside dining patio (reserve in advance!). An acquaintance stayed in the ';mansion'; part of Esperanza recently and said it was really nice. They also have a ';motel'; part next door. From peeking in during our visits, the rooms in the motel part are a little small, the balconies/patios are TINY, and if you have a first floor room, your ';patio with lake view'; is actually the inn%26#39;s parking lot!

Other B%26amp;Bs we%26#39;ve tried and enjoyed are Fox Inn, Finton%26#39;s Landing (right on the lake, with a private beach....great for summer!), and Merrit Hill Manor -- all located in Pen Yan. We stayed at, but did not like, the Cherry Orchard B%26amp;B on Seneca.

If I were you, I would pick one place to stay.

On our very first trip to the area, we visited Ithaca, but just for lunch. I don%26#39;t remember much of the town, other than there was a quaint little town center to walk around in.

The Village Tavern in Hammondsport is a regular stop for us for lunch...another quaint ';town square'; area.

Re the wineries....this is one of the Finger Lake%26#39;s great attractions, IMO. I really would recommend stopping at a few wineries, at least.

    Great Specifics for Finger Lakes

    Coleridge,

The fingerlakes is great anytime of the year, if you have a chance come at least one time in every season. Niagara Falls is about 2 1/2 to 3 hour drive from Watkins Glen if this is any help. If you get a chance plan on going to The Glen in watkins Glen they are having a celebration this year for being open to the public for a 100 years. It is a great walk even if you take the bus to the top and walk down, but one advice park on the street not in the parks parking lot, way over priced. But the veiw walking down is wonderful. We are starting to walk it every other weekend and we live right next door to it and never get tired of the view, it changes everytime we walk it. There are a lot of good Wineries on Seneca lake, we have the most of all three lakes and a lot of good one. Award winning wines as well. Take it from a local My family and I are very Blessed to live in the watkins Glen Area. The Hills and trees and valley and local wines and fruit and the whole deal is wonderful. We would like to see more coming into the area(which we do have a new hotel coming opening next summer) but I wish we had more to offer tourists and locals. It will come hopefully

What is the Glen that you write about? We will be in the Finger Lakes for 4 days, from October 11. I am reallylooking forward to it. We reserved two nights at the Esperanza Mansion and will reserve 2 nights at a place near Ithica, maybe Silver Strand at Sheldrake.Do you know of it?

We are happy for any and all info. Thanks,Coleridge

If you visit one winery while you%26#39;re in the Finger Lakes, try Dr. Frank, which is not too far from Esperanza Mansion where you%26#39;ll be staying. Dr. Konstantin Frank emigrated from Germany and was the main person responsible for bringing new types of grapes to the Finger Lakes region. IMO, they offer the best wines in the Finger Lakes. Also, many of the different wineries%26#39; grounds/locations offer some of the best lake views.

The poster was reffering To Watkins Glen State Park one of the most popular parks in NY and well worth the stop. The main trail is a walk up a river gorge past and behind several waterfalls. A lot of steps but do able by most anyone. The park also has a nice swiming pool and very nice campground.

    Coleridge,

I Have heard of Silver Strand nice place. I will go down to the tourist office and get a phone number and an address for you to call them or even you could email them or something and they could send you out a lot of information. Watkins Glen State Park is Great, and it is open I do beleive until the last weekend in October. They have buses that take you to the top so you can walk down and enjoy the veiw and take pictures. You want to make sure you bring a pair of walking sneakers cause it can be a little wet at some points. Since you do walk under the falls. Sounds like you will be on the east side of the lake for a fews days. That is the the best side of the lake you can watch the sunset over the hill and across the lake. There are a lot of good wineries on the side of the lake. There are around 30 winries(i do beleive) around seneca lake. There seems to be new ones popping up every year. There is a couple of places right in watkins Geln that have wines from most if not all of the wineries. Esperanz Manison Not sure where that is of course I don%26#39;t need to find a place to stay around here cause we live here. So I am not much help on the places where to stay. But if you need any more information you could always email me at minbeh@hotmail.com and I could find out answers for you by asking around . http://www.schuylerny.com Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce

And at the end of the lake Captain Bills has a boat that they take out on the weekend for an hour ride and you can get some nice pic and see some really nice things. There are a lot of things to see around here. To me the Little wineries are the best they kinda cater to the people unlike the bigger one, Hazlitt%26#39;s is a nice one and over on the other lake Hosmer%26#39;s winery and then just outside of watkins is Lakewood winery that is really nice and then of course there is Fulkerson%26#39;s winery. I don%26#39;t come to thise site very often but if you want to write please do and I will help you with what ever I can.

I just want to thank everyone for all of the very good and useful info. We are sooo grateful.Coleridge

in answer to your inquiry, the Silver Strand is terrific. My wife and i stayed there last year and we%26#39;re going again this summer. The rooms are pretty enough and the breakfasts are great but the real bonus is that the vibe is good-humored and not at all stuffy. View of west coast of Cayuga is beauitful. I agree that the Central Park Zoo and the playgrounds near it are your best bet, but it also depends on where you%26#39;re going to be staying, I have 2 kids and always found it very, very hard to do anything with a 1 year old. Are you going to be staying in Manhattan or is it that you will just be in the area? If the latter, what area, there may be better choices. Also, when will you be doing this? Summer in NYC can be very hard on little kids -- not just hot but humid, something you Angelenos won%26#39;t be used to.

On the other hand, if your kid stays by your side nicely, eg in a stroller, you can do almost anything, including the museums (but the last time I checked the Metropolitan and maybe some others had restrictions on the use of strollers due to the crowds).

The Metropolitan has restrictions on strollers on weekends and for some special exhibits, but they are okay the rest of the time.

If your daughter travels well, you really can take her anywhere. My sixteen month old goes most places with us and as long as it isn%26#39;t near nap time when she%26#39;s cranky, it%26#39;s fine.

    Souvineirs at reasonable prices?

Hi can some body please recommend the best places to buy souviniers as I don%26#39;t want to be ripped off, Many thanx!!

    Souvineirs at reasonable prices?

Any store that sells them, don%26#39;t be afraid to bargain alittle, especially if you are going to purchase alot from them. Check out as many stores as you can and see which has the best selections. I particularly liked Phantom of Broadway, alot of the souvenirs you would be looking for.

By the way, have fun in NYC and when you get to Los Angeles, please don%26#39;t compare us with NYC! It is much more spectacular in NYC!

Although I was born and raised in LA, I love NYC!

    sorry

Cheap Airfare from Memphis to New York City?

What would be the cheapest roundtrip airfare from Memphis to New York City sometime in July? The cheapest I%26#39;ve found so far is on Kayak.com. We are staying for 2 nights. Thanks for your help!

Cheap Airfare from Memphis to New York City?

Both Kayak and SideStep.com are mega search engines for travel, not booking services, which trawl through many different databases (includiing those of the airlines themselves) to come up with results. And unlike the travel consolidators like Expedia, flights from discount airlines such as JetBlue will be included on the list of possibilities they retrieve for you. So I think it very unlikely that you%26#39;ll do better elsewhere.

Priceline may be a possibility, but it%26#39;s been my experience that it%26#39;s rare to get the kind of bargain airfares there you used to be able to snag. Since airlines generally have cut back their number of flights, they feel fairly confident that they can sell out what flights are in existence and so don%26#39;t have as much of a need to accept a lowball Priceline bid. You might be able to get a good price via Priceline on a flight itinerary which turns out to be wacky %26amp; has you making a detour along the way (e.g., Chicago or Atlanta), but since your travel time is so limited, I don%26#39;t think you want to spend any more of those 2 days in the air/at an airport than you have to.

Hi we will be staying in an apartment at this location for 5 days and I would like to buy milk, cereal and a few other items for the kitchen. Is there a grocery near by?

Grocery near 142 west 49th st

I know there%26#39;s a Food Emporium at 8th Ave and W. 49th - do you know what your cross Avenue is? You can even check the weekly specials on their website!

Grocery near 142 west 49th st

That sounds like Radio City Apts. The Food Emporium is closest. You should also wander up to the Whole Foods Market in the basement of the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle (59th St. and Broadway). The place is incredible!

I love Whole Foods, thanks for the information.

It%26#39;s not a diner, but Ess-a-Bagel is right around the corner. Wonderful bagels, and great for a breakfast on the go. You probably have a kitchen at the Kimberly. There is a little grocery around the corner called Azure that has a great salad bar and other items if you choose to eat in your room.

    Laguardia Help!

What are my options for ground transportation from Laguardia to the Hampton Inn FInancial Dst/Pearl St.

I am comfortable with taking public transportation, but would also do a limo/shuttle if the price is right...

    thanks in advance!!!

    Laguardia Help!

You could take an express bus to Penn Station for $12/person and then either a subway or taxi from there. Not sure which subway stop that would be closest to. Here%26#39;s the info on the airport bus.

    www.nyairportservice.com/lga_manhattan.html

Given how close LGA is to the city, I%26#39;d just takea taxi. The fare should be about $35.

    Laguardia Help!

This topic comes up on the forum on a regular basis and it seems that most people would agree that a taxi is the best way to go. I strongly suggest that you stay away from the Super Shuttle. We used it last summer and it was somewhat of a nightmare. If you search super shuttle on this forum, you will see that I%26#39;m not the only one who feels that way. How many people are in your party? The more people, the more economical it is because the taxi fare is not per person. Whichever you decide on, enjoy!

I LOVE NYC public transportation and no, I%26#39;m not a crazy person! :)

We always arrive in Laguardia and take public transpo. We grab a bus right outside the door, take that into Queens, hop on the subway and arrive straight at Grand Central. It takes about an hour but it%26#39;s fun to me. Plus, you get to see Queens (which we normally don%26#39;t see because we don%26#39;t venture out from Manhattan) and seeing the skyscrapers of Manhattan the whole ride just really gets me so excited!

Don%26#39;t try taking Public Trans with full luggage in tow

If you just have a carry on , that%26#39;s fine

Taxi to Manhattan from LaGuardia or JFK is a set price

    I believe it is $35

JFK to Manhattan - fixed rate is $45.

LGA to Manhattan - you pay the metered rate.

Yes, I%26#39;d agree about not taking public transportation if you have a lot of luggage. I%26#39;ve seen people do it and it%26#39;s just awful in those cramped bus aisles and packed subways.

We always just take a backpack each per Rick Steves. :) If necessary, we do a load of laundry (which allows us to fantasize for a couple of hours that we are New Yorkers out doing our laundry instead of just visitors).

Unlike most tourists, I%26#39;m sure, we attempt to save money where we can so that we may visit more museums and such. ALWAYS public transpo, NO taxis, McDonald%26#39;s/Subway/etc. for lunch and then a local restaurant for dinner.

    Federal Reserve Bank tour question

    On the website it says:

    Tours Facts

The tour is free of charge, but space is limited. Up to 30 visitors can be accommodated each hour. Students must be at least 16 years old or juniors in high school. One adult must accompany each group of nine students. Wheelchair access is provided from the Maiden Lane entrance.

    ------

Am I reading this correct in that you must be 16 years old to go on a tour? I thought others have said they were taking even a 3 year old.

I%26#39;m probably too late to even be requesting tickets for this, but thought my kids would love to do this (7 and 9)

    thanks!

    Federal Reserve Bank tour question

Since it says you should phone them for a reservation, I%26#39;d ask THEM your question. It does appear they want kids to be at least 16.

    To request a tour:

Call (212) 720-6130. (Calling is recommended since availability can be determined immediately.)

    Federal Reserve Bank tour question

I%26#39;ve been trying forever to book this tour. I once wrote them two months in advance, and I could offer them 4 different dates, and they were all booked up. Maybe it is less frequented in the summer time, but in winter and spring time I had no chance!

If you can%26#39;t get the tour, you can still go into the building and see some of the exhibits.

thank you all for your help! :)

I agree it%26#39;s a bit confusing but I wonder if they mean students on their own? Maybe children are allowed if accompanied by an adult?I%26#39;ve recently booked a tour and have received the tickets. I didn%26#39;t give the children%26#39;s ages when making the request and they didn%26#39;t ask, just thought I%26#39;d take the chance although mine are a bit older than yours at 14 and 16.

frbnytours@ny.frb.org is the email address to request a tour, why not drop them a line and ask about the children. Good luck.

  • NY Hotel

    Hi,

As you know I have posted topics here, and basically what I would like to ask about this time is Hotels. I am looking for hotels in New York, but its coming up as very expensive whereas New Jersey Hotels are much cheaper. How is the public transport from New Jersey to New York.

Basically I want to stay in a hotel where I am not alienated. we would like to simply hop on the subway and be connected around the city, i.e. Center Park, Get to the hop on anf off bus tour, etc

    Can anyone recommend a hotel??

    Thanks

Where to sit in yankee stadium ?

    Hi,

I am travelling to NYC for the first time and plan on going to my first ever baseball game in yankee stadium against Tampa bay on the 28th. I am looking for help on which tickets I should get, there seems to be plenty still available.

So what advice would you give, is Tier 28/29/30 better then the bleachers ? Is the bleachers worth it at all ? Should I hold out for a ticket behind the plate ?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me

Where to sit in yankee stadium ?

While the bleachers is a really cool place to watch the game they do not sell beer in that section. A good place to watch the game is in the upper deck behind home plate.

Thanks, What about the tiers high above 1st or 3rd ?

    JFK to West 46th

    Hi all

can any of the experts tell an NYC virgin best way to get from JFK to W46th with a couple of suitcases and an excited wife ?

    JFK to West 46th

hello again, I%26#39;m in the same situation, in NY from 19th to 22nd Oct, I was given this which was helpful, I would think you get the airbus from JFK to Howard Beach or Jamiaca then a train to Penn Station and then subway or cab to the hotel (I%26#39;m sure someone will correct me if I%26#39;m wrong !)

    http://www.panynj.gov/airtrain/

    JFK to West 46th

If you don%26#39;t feel like springing for a taxi ($45 plus toll and tip, so figure more like $58), I would suggest the bus (either the Carey Bus or the Gray Line, both of which seem to stop frequently). Whatever you do, do NOT get in a vehicle other than a licensed NYC taxi!! Check out the following link for information.

New York to Boston and back

We%26#39;re travelling to NYC and Boston the first week of October. Were thinking of taking the Amtrak from NYC to Boston, but my husband wants to rent a car to come back to NYC so that we can see the fall foilage and maybe stop in Providence and other places along the way. However, we don%26#39;t necessarily want to return the car in the city. Is there a train station near a rental car place somewhere outside of NYC where we could return a car, then take a train for the last leg of our return trip back to Penn Station? And or get a shuttle from an outside Manhattan rental car agency to take us to our NYC hotel. Suggestions?

New York to Boston and back

Try White Plains - a half hour trip into Grand Central Terminal via Metro North, may pay to rent %26amp; return from there, and on the route t0 %26amp; from Boston.

Or, have you considered flying into Boston, then heading to NYC and flying home from the city, instead of making a round trip from NYC/Boston?

New York to Boston and back

Have you checked what the one-way drop would be on a rental car? It might be cheaper for you to rent it round trip, then you could take one route up (the coast - Mystic, Newport) and the other way back (Sturbridge, the Berkshires).

Why wouldn%26#39;t you just drop off the car in the city? Seems like too much hassel to take a train back with all your luggage. Driving into NYC really isn%26#39;t as bad as it seems.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions; will check out all to see which works out best; we have restricted vouchers that we are using to fly in and out of NYC which is why we%26#39;re not flying into Boston; my kids have also never had the experience of riding commuter rail and that%26#39;s the reason we thought of doing that.

We will rethink the option of driving into Manhattan, but also like the suggestion of the White Plains option...I am limiting ourselves to one moderate sized rolling luggage and backpack per person so we are aren%26#39;t as concerned with that. I like the idea of driving through Mystic, etc...was there 30 years ago as a Girl Scout so it%26#39;ll be neat to revisit with my own kids. Thanks again for all of your ideas! Although it%26#39;s too late to reconsider, and I%26#39;m also working with a fall school break that one of my children has, is that first week of October too soon to catch color change in the leaves?
