I checked several websites and could not believe how expensive hotel rooms are in November....8-11....what is going on...a room at the Hilton is 499$...I have not been to New York for over a year...am I out of touch or is somethng big going on in town????

Look on quikbook.com There are quite a few decent hotels available for around $250/night. I%26#39;d go for the Kimberly for $255 or the Blakely for $289.
