New York to Boston and back

We%26#39;re travelling to NYC and Boston the first week of October. Were thinking of taking the Amtrak from NYC to Boston, but my husband wants to rent a car to come back to NYC so that we can see the fall foilage and maybe stop in Providence and other places along the way. However, we don%26#39;t necessarily want to return the car in the city. Is there a train station near a rental car place somewhere outside of NYC where we could return a car, then take a train for the last leg of our return trip back to Penn Station? And or get a shuttle from an outside Manhattan rental car agency to take us to our NYC hotel. Suggestions?

New York to Boston and back

Try White Plains - a half hour trip into Grand Central Terminal via Metro North, may pay to rent %26amp; return from there, and on the route t0 %26amp; from Boston.

Or, have you considered flying into Boston, then heading to NYC and flying home from the city, instead of making a round trip from NYC/Boston?

New York to Boston and back

Have you checked what the one-way drop would be on a rental car? It might be cheaper for you to rent it round trip, then you could take one route up (the coast - Mystic, Newport) and the other way back (Sturbridge, the Berkshires).

Why wouldn%26#39;t you just drop off the car in the city? Seems like too much hassel to take a train back with all your luggage. Driving into NYC really isn%26#39;t as bad as it seems.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions; will check out all to see which works out best; we have restricted vouchers that we are using to fly in and out of NYC which is why we%26#39;re not flying into Boston; my kids have also never had the experience of riding commuter rail and that%26#39;s the reason we thought of doing that.

We will rethink the option of driving into Manhattan, but also like the suggestion of the White Plains option...I am limiting ourselves to one moderate sized rolling luggage and backpack per person so we are aren%26#39;t as concerned with that. I like the idea of driving through Mystic, etc...was there 30 years ago as a Girl Scout so it%26#39;ll be neat to revisit with my own kids. Thanks again for all of your ideas! Although it%26#39;s too late to reconsider, and I%26#39;m also working with a fall school break that one of my children has, is that first week of October too soon to catch color change in the leaves?
