Taxi for 5

Mom, Dad and 3 kids age 6,9,11.

Will we be able to take a taxi with 5 people in Manhattan?

Are there laws restricting drivers from picking up that many people?

I know we could easily seat one adult up front and the other in the back with 3kids but will this work?

I%26#39;m thinking not but if anyone has experienced this type of dilema, please share.

My other option is to rent a car from the airport and keep for duration of our trip but I really dread the thought of driving and parking around town.

Thanks in advance!

From the airport the chances are you will not be able to get a taxi to take you unless it is a van. It is illegal for more than 4 riders to be in a taxi, so most drivers will not go for it. Get a van taxi (luck of the draw), or call a car service like 212-777-7777 and see if they have van transportation.

The taxi laws say four passengers only but allows for a child under 7 to be held on an adult%26#39;s lap. For comfort, you might want to wait for one of the minivan taxis - don%26#39;t worry, there are a few of them. Else, book a private car service. Here are some companies often mentioned on this board:

The information given above is incorrect.

The law does recognize the existence of five-passenger taxicabs in New York City, although they are not common and most taxis are four-passenger. Furthermore, since you have children travelling with you, it is possible that one of the children is young enough to allow you to have five people in any cab: if a child is under seven that child may ride as a fifth passenger even in a so-called four-passenger taxi, provided the child sits on the lap of an adult in the rear.

Here is the actual regulation the drivers must follow [Rule 2-43 (a) of the NYC TAxicab Drivers Rules]:

';A driver shall not permit more than four (4) passengers to ride in a four (4) passenger taxicab, nor more than five (5) passengers in a five (5) passenger taxicab, except that an additional passenger must be accepted if such passenger is under the age of seven (7) and is held on the lap of an adult passenger seated in the rear.';
