My husband and I are staying at the New Howard Johnson%26#39;s in Brooklyn at 599 Utica Ave. What kind of neighborhood is this, and is there a subway station close.

Jane, there are subways close, but this is absoultely not a nice area. Change the reservation if possible.

A few years ago I would say, no don%26#39;t go there. But the Howard Johnson has only been opened a short while now, less than five months ago. The neighborhood seems to be making a turnaround for the better. it is predominantly Caribbean Americans who live in the area so there are many shops restaurants with a caribbean flavor.
The subway is not that far off. If you like walking it would be a 15 minute walk to the subway otherwise take the B46 bus and it willtake you to the Eastern Parkway subway station where you can get the #3 or #4 train to Manhattan.
