NYC on a Budget

Im planning to visit NY last week of december with my family (4 persons). looking for lower cost found Houston- JFK best airfare (270 roundtrip). the problem is that I found the best hotel rates in Jersey City (best view also). If We arrive to EWR will cost me an additional 280 (with that I can pay 2 hotel nights ). What is the transportation time and cost. how will affect wheather. need Help to make a good decision. thanks in advance

EWR to Jersey City will cost less than EWR to NYC. Getting to the city from Jersey City will be relatively quick and not too expensive. Check with the hotel to find out if a PATH train station is near the hotel or where you can get a NJ transit bus. The PATH train will take you to 33rd Street and Broadway; a NJ Transit bus will take you to 42nd St. and 8th Avenue.

What are you paying for your room in Jersey City? I wouldn%26#39;t ever recommend someone staying there if they can help it. There are hostels and places like Hotel 31 that you can try before deciding on staying in Jersey.

If you are flying into JFK, I would stay in Queens over Jersey City. It%26#39;s a little bit of a pain to travel cheaply from JFK to NJ. The commute from Jersey City to Manhattan is not bad though.

I agree that if you can swing it, stay in Manhattan.

Thanks to all. I was thinking in Hyatt, doubletree or Candlewood in Jersey City. Time ago a friend make a bid and got Hyatt for $110/night. He tell us Hyatt has a great view. What other options do I have if We arrive to JFK? is it posible to have manhattan view? Is it a safe area?

You can definitely get a cab to Jersey City from JFK for less than $280 and it will probably take about an hour, unless you hit serious traffic.

A cab from Newark Airport to Jersey City will be about 15 minutes.

I think its best to stay in Manhattan, but there%26#39;s nothing wrong with staying in Jersey City.

Leave lots of time to transit through Houston! Especially on a weekend or Monday.

We live in MTY Mexico. My Idea is to drive and save around $900 departing from IAH. Will drive to Houston a day before and stay a night there. Driving and staying a night in Houston will probably be no more than $200. $400 roundtrip. That will give us a $500 saving on airfares. What will be the best time to drive in Houston Area?.

Wanting to save money from the airport??

You can take the ';air train'; from JFK to Penn Station (you have to switch to LIRR at Jamaica). I think they have this priced at around $13. From there you can take the PATH at 6th Ave and 33rd St to the Jersey City Hyatt. This is if you don%26#39;t have too much heavy luggage and you don%26#39;t mind walking.

You can also take the E train from Jamiaca to World Trade Center (a little more than an hour) and get the PATH there to Jersey City. The views are good, but the PATH doesn%26#39;t run often except at rush hours, and cabs to Jersey City are VERY expensive, so i wouldn%26#39;t stay there. However, it is probably the cheapest ';4 star'; hotel you will find around here.

jj8a- I can shed a little light since I am from Houston.

I assume you will be coming into Houston on Interstate 10 or Hwy 290?

No matter what, avoid 290 and I-10 heading into Houston between 6:30am and 8:30am unless you like stop and go traffic. Rush hour traffic is heading east into downtown between 6:30 and 8:30.

Regardless of Intercontinental Airport or Hobby airport you will want to avoid the North (IAH) or South (HOU) trips between 4:30pm and 6:30pm. That is rush hour traffic heading out of downtown both north and south.

By the way, I understand that the Country Inn and Suites at either IAH or HOU offers a park and fly - if you stay the night before your flight with them, they will park your flight for free.

Not sure when you are planning on going to NY, but since Jet Blue announced service out of Houston, the fares at Continetnal to JFK and LGA have gone down to about $210 pp with taxes after Sep 7, 06.
